foray into film!

A couple weeks ago, I took my first film workshop with the amazing Julie Paisley and Christina Blanarovich, and I’m so excited to finally share this post! I love film scan day!

The more I do wedding photography and am exposed to the film work of Jose Villa, Elizabeth Messina, Bryce Covey, KT Merry, Jen Huang (juuuuust to name a few hah!), the more I realize how much I love the art of film photography! I used a 35mm film body in high school and college classes, but everything was set to “auto” mode, and I don’t think I ever understood what I was really doing. I knew that I loved taking pictures and developing my own prints in the darkroom, but I never learned the technical side of photography until much later. Wedding and portrait photography has definitely forced me to get my act together and shoot in manual mode, and I’ve never turned back! =P

I’ve been quite eager in taking a film workshop and learning the basics of properly exposing and working with 35mm and medium format film, because it is vastly different than working with a digital camera. Julie and Christina were a wealth of knowledge and were so helpful in answering all of my questions. I’m just sad we didn’t have more time to shoot film! But this will not be the last time I do it – as I grow and learn more about film, I hope to incorporate it more alongside my digital work. I’m excited for what’s to come…film is not dead, friends! =)
